I would say that because the question is worded "comparing OR contrasting" then you need to pick one side and stay with it. Write a paper only on simlarities or only on differences. This is actually easier than trying to write a paper that includes both. Here is the basic outline i give to my 8th graders when writing an essay:

Par 1:
*Effective Start (set a scene, famous quote, ask a question, or state a fact)
*Additional Info
*Thesis statement (your purpose for writing your paper)

Par 2:
*Topic sentence supporting thesis 1
*Supporting detail 1
*Supporting detail 2
*Supporting detail 3
*Concl. Statement

Par 3:
*Topic sentence supporting thesis 2
*Supporting detail 1
*Supporting detail 2
*Supporting detail 3
*Concl. Statement

Par 4:
*Topic sentence supporting thesis 3
*Supporting detail 1
*Supporting detail 2
*Supporting detail 3
*Concl. Statement

Par 5:
*Restate your thesis (in different words)
*Give additional info
*Closing (leave your reader with something to think about)

pretty much pick a character say the main male character in the first story and say how he is different to the main male character in the other one...and say how they are similar. also say what the setting is like so for e.g. if it gives any hints as to what the season is...if one's spring and one's winter...perhaps say what each could mean for e.g. spring suggests nature, births of baby animals therefore a new beginning and winter suggests death of things. also with the plot..compare what its about and how they are similar or how they differ.
if you were going to compare say...harry potter to lord of the rings..and you were comparing harry and frodo you would say something like "in harry potter, harry is a young wizard who is often conflicting with good and evil and often finds it dificult to decide which side he is on whereas in lord of the rings, frodo is certain of which side to take and doesn't mess with evil" (bit of a crappy example but you know!)

The thesis statement is your opinion, or the main idea that the entire essay is based on. So, basically: what's your opinion? Are they more alike or less alike one another?

In compare-and-contrast, you usually use either block or point-by-point format.

Block Format:
Introduction
Anthem- 3 points on it (say, individualism, theme, setting)
Antz- commentary on the same three points
Conclusion

Point-by-Point
Introduction
Point #1 (i.e., Theme)- what does Anthem do? What does Antz do?
Point #2 (i.e, Individualism)
Point #3 (i.e., Setting)
Conclusion
(Point-by-point has always been easier for me)

The main point of both Antz and Anthem is inviduality, or rather lack of it in society. They both revolve around a male protagonist who accomplishes something, but doesn't recieve recognition for it because of the emphasis of the gropu and de-emphasis on the individual, as well as a female who shares these values. However, Anthem is much more radical- the characters are forbidden the use of the word "I", and use plural pronouns even when referring to one person. In Antz, there are individual antagonists, whereas in Anthem, it is Equality 7-2521 against a collective society divided into councils, although in either case the theme is man vs. society In Antz, there is talk of a utopia where individual recognition does exist. In Anthem, there are the "Unmentionable Times" (the distant past) that were far more advanced, but they are "unmentionable", and therefore don't provide the same inspiration for Equality 7-2521 (later, Prometheus) until later in the book.

You compare and contrast all of the time; you just haven't had to write an essay doing so. What I want you to do is just start writing a list of the qualities of a good manager. Don't try to put these in any grammatical form or worry about spellling at this point. Underneath or beside each quality, write an example of how a good manager displays that quality. For example, if you say that a good manager tries to help his employees, you might list the example of his letting a person rearrange his schedule in order to go to his child's school function. You need to define what is good in order to define what is bad. A bad manager would refuse to let the employee change his schedule, and that would cause hard feelings on the part of the employee. So, you are going to list good qualities on one sheet of paper and the corresponding bad qualities on another sheet of paper. After that, read through what you have to see how you want to arrange these. You can write a big A, B, C, etc beside each one. Now you are ready to put all of this into essay format. we had to compare 5 different things too, except they were poems.

what i did is write points about each, and then take similarities, compare them, making sure u mention all four constantly and refer to the question.

I.e
(this is not true but,,,)

the temple of horus is based a simple square shape, on the outside it is very simplistic but inside it is heavily decorated, similarly the pantheon is also square and heavily decorated, however, the decoration is extended to the exterior also; featuring collums and carvings, like those found at st marks.

etc etc.
