On writing essays & stories etc, I AGREE with Others that READING good interesting books helps tremendously bec you see different ways writers tell stories and your papers should reflect some type of storytelling ability. For most interesting books, select from Newberry Awards or check Amazon Feedback on titles and may I recommend some good books our 2 kids read last summer: Red Kayak, Under War Torn Sky, Hope was Here, The Giver, Gary Paulsen's TUCKET series. Also having your writing critiqued so you understand how to apply new ideas & suggestions the next time helps as does taking advantage of other opportunities to write such as the school paper, community organization or the like as it will help build your confidence as you get better.

As for ESSAY exams, my method may not be the best bec I like having time to edit and redit until I am comfortable it demonstrates correct English, the paragraph structure etc is there as well as introduction and conclusion...but at the same time I also want whoever is grading it to know that I understand & have complete knowledge of the subject material, maybe the grammar and structure might not be the best (thus if this was an English essay I would take different approach) but basically I study and prepare for my responses the same way but I compile my answers into a laundry list format where a key reflects something key to jog my memory...so now the essay question appears and I say/think JZDX and so forth => then I start writing so I have the key facts frim those letters and go expand from there. There might be other better methods of course...
