Help With Writing Essays

Felicia Said:

i'm not good with writing essays..what are some tips to help me become a better writer?

We Answered:

It's a skill and a talent. Some people can write well by nature, and others have to learn.

If you need help writing essays, here are a few tips:

Start out small. Make sure your topic isn't too broad, or you may end up rushing the information or not providing enough detail. For example, don't attempt to write a two-page essay on "Dogs". Also avoid choosing a topic on "Pit bulls". Both these topics may be a bit too broad. When writing an essay, you're looking for as much detail as possible without boring your reader. Try a specific topic. "Aggression in Pit Bulls" or "The History of the Breed".

Once you have your topic, decide where you're going to go with it. Do you think pit bulls are dangerous? Is the essay going to be warning people about the danger of pit bulls, or letting them know that a pit bull isn't particularly dangerous unless it is placed in the wrong hands? Once you chose that topic, pick three points (or more; in High School and early college essays, they usually ask for three). Order these points/arguments from weakest to strongest.

Make sure you acknowledge the opposing viewpoints...

"Pit Bulls are believed to be dangerous because they are used in illegal dog fights,"

...and retort.

"If this breed were to be placed into the hands of a responsible owner, however, it would be as loving as any other family pet."

Avoid redundancy. Notice how I didn't use the word "dog" or "breed" twice in the same sentence. I didn't even use "dog" in the following sentence. Don't be afraid to use a Thesaurus, but make sure you use it as a reference. If you don't know the definition or proper context of words that are mentioned in the Thesaurus, don't use them.

Try to vary up your sentence structure for more interesting reading. Simple sentences make readers bored, while too many compound sentences may make them confused.

"They say dogs are man's best friend. Best friends stick together. Pit bulls are dogs that are considered mean." Do you see how dull that sounds? It sounds like you're trying to sound official, but you're really just boring your reader. Spice it up!

"If dogs are man's best friend, pit bulls would be considered our worst enemy. Why is this?" It flows a bit nicer, no?

Read your essays out loud as you go. If it seems like things are too short and staccato, revise your sentences to make them flow better.

Details are good! I don't mean adjectives. Avoid using more than two adjectives in a sentence. I mean, give details as to why pit bulls are considered mean. Also, use a stronger word than "mean". Try "vicious," but only use that word once per paragraph! It's one that has a hundred different synonyms.

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but those are techniques I use regularly. Keep it interesting. Start out slowly and go out with a bang. Leave the reader thinking.

Don't use I. Don't use you. Don't give your specific opinion directly.
i.e. Instead of saying, "I think pit bulls are the most adorable breed," try something more along the lines of, "This dog, after all, is still just a precious puppy inside." It'll make the reader think of the cute pit bull puppy instead of the grown-up dog he turned into.

I hope I helped!

Can anyone help me with writing essays on war literature?

We Answered:

when was the literature written? thats a good way to start. most war lit was written because it wants to react to a particular period in time wherein war might have happened, or the time was just particularly hard that war could happen. Explain the possible reason the literature was written in the first place. What was the author's motive in writing? how was he able to deliver that motive through the characters and events that took place in the novel. What was the author's final take on the war as evidenced by the conclusion of the novel?

Would taking AP Literature & Composition help with writing essays in college?

We Answered:

Literature is probably going to be slightly more helpful if only because it's slightly more similar to the kind of writing you actually do in college. But the difference is minimal.

And neither class is going to get you that far in college (minus whatever credits you get). A 45 minute essay really cannot be compared to a 20 page research paper written over the course of a semester.

Discuss It!
