Good Essay Writing

Brett Said:

What are easy ways of writing a good essay?

We Answered:

Intro:
Broad Sentences (maybe 3 considering you're writing a page)
Thesis (One statement that clearly states the subject of your essay)
3 Ideas (The 3 ideas will be broadly stated in here and then be mentionned later on in paragraphs)

Paragraphs:
Your first idea. Explain without getting off-topic and defend only yourself.
Then second and then third.

Conclusion:
State your three ideas, then your thesis and then -- what my teacher calls -- a WOW sentence. It's the last sentence that your teacher / professer reads, so make it good!

Remember, don't ever say 'I think' in an essay. you ALWAYS know.
Don't ever say 'Imagine' either. ex: Imagine yourself in that situation.

Hope this format helped.

What are some good strategies for writing a good essay?

We Answered:

1. Mind Map, get a piece of paper with your essay heading in the centre, from there make lines coming out with points you want to raise (like a spider) them from each of these points take more lines from these breaking down the point further.
2. Research, look up books, internet sites, and new articles that back up the argument you want to make, remember though if you make a direct quote from any of these articles you must use quotation marks, and reference the person who originally wrote it.
3. Write an introduction, tell them what your topic is, what argument you plan to make and give a brief history of the topic in general.
4. Main body of text, use your mind map to structure your argument and to make sure you dont miss anything out that you really need to say, remember to use quotes.
5. Your conclusion, tie everything together, hitting home what your argument was, and how you came to that conclusion.
6. Bibliography, this is your chance to show what texts you used to research your topic, and where you got all your quotes from. the more the better, but dont just quote for quotations sake.

Hope this helps.

tips for writing a good essay for "why do you want to attend this program"?

We Answered:

1 - what first interested you in the program
2 - what do you want to learn in the program
3 - what can YOU contribute if you participate (probably the most important)
4 - what are three interesting things about you (maybe use one)
5 - how can you use the information/experience from the program to make myself and my environment better (meaning your school, community, family, etc.)

What is the best way to enrich my vocabulary for good essay writing?

We Answered:

this is one of the classic books on increasing you vocab.

Very good.

This is a link to the Johnson O'Connor aptitude testing website. Besides their great aptitude, as opposed to personality, they also have a system of increasing your vocabulary that is very very effective.

As a note on making your essays more eloquant while remaining consise, remember that you only get there with practice and experience. You won't be able to write like that unless you have the experience to draw upon. I like to use the thesuars a lot when writing papers. Also write more directly. Use more action tense rather than the passive tense. Easier said than done.

Also as this website says it is always better to use simplier english. Why? Because the common words are easily understood. Don't get an ego over having a large vocabulary. It is better to be understood is it not? Mastering complex words allows us to have greater mastery over the less complex. It is only useful if we learn to communicate more clearly. http://www.arc.sbc.edu/Conciseness.doc
