The purpose is to investigate a hypothesis in some depth - gathering evidence from reading and research and considering as many aspects as possible before reaching a conclusion. The purpose is supposedly to add to the body of knowledge on a topic.

I did a post grad thesis on the topic of Architectural Salvage - examining historical precedents (mostly anecdotal) to provide an historical framework, canvassing opinion from various authorities (including a survey on attitudes) and investigating collateral effects - in this case architectural theft. It was important to define what areas one was looking at - in order to give some focus to the work and avoid regurgitating someone else's efforts.

Well you can bring up examples of artisit that only painted idealised forms of women in their time period like Rueben... It wasn't until the 60 that the thin look was considered attractive to western culture. There are all sorts of cultures through out time and even today that find different bodytypes desirable. The popular art of these cultures normally reflect the most desired bodytype of their periods. However i am not sure if you can argue that the asthetics of the culture effect the art or if the art affects the asthetics.
