on a college application, you should be able to feel free to elaborate a bit on your hobbies -- therefore, you shouldn't be preoccupied with word choice so much as with whether you can articulate what you mean. i think "writing" sounds better. you can also then explain further that you like essays and prose using a dash or something: writing -- essays, prose, etc.

Other than learning how to write well, writing essays also helps you learn to organize ideas.

Having a thesis and supporting it, having an introduction and conclusion--these are higher order thinking skills that are needed in advanced jobs and in college and in effective communication at all levels.

Immature students often think that they can make a point by saying "it's true because I said so." Doesn't work for educated grown ups! Essay writing teaches you how to think and communicate.

Depends on what type of help you need... I've read loads of material on essay/writing skills, and the one I found to be EXTREMELY helpful is 'Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day' by Joan Bolker. Now, I know you asked about essay writing and not thesis, but I'm only doing minor thesis (for Honours) and figured I'd find a few pearls of wisdom in it. And I sooooo did. Bolker's emphasis is overcoming blockages, and she offers very practical strategies for dealing with the lurgies that get in the way for many of us. You can discard the dissertation-specific bits, and glean the pearls - that's what I've done and it's been very very helpful.

Go to Amazon and search 'essay writing' - you can view the first few pages of the books that are listed. You'll be able to tell very quickly if any of the books offer the help you need.

putting your effort in the wrong places does not help lol - just because you put a lot of effort into something, it doesn't necessarily mean it will turn out great

right to make your essays more thrilling to look at:

analyse your audience and tailor it to their vocabulary and their interests
use a variety of words ( using for instance 3-4 times in the same page can be mind numbing)
vary the length of your sentences
use impact words - they are short and punchy (if you want some ideas on this try reading a tabloid newspaper for about 2 weeks and you should begin to see it in your essays)

structure it so it seems obvious what you're talking about e.g. introduction you may talk about how teenagers today maybe messed up and provide some points to talk about; use these points in your body and make each point a paragraph that flows for instance you could say how drugs is a problem, then say how drug promotes antisocial behaviour because of the chemicals in them then link it to aggressive crimes like knife crimes or bullying then mention how they fund their drugs via stealing etc. do you see how it seems to flow in a chain?

you might notice that writing essays is not the same thing as writing obituaries or reports on a tree's life cycle. It's dynamic, it is bounded with your interests and you can put your ideas on paper so not only one person knows but whoever isn't there to hear you talk about it will also know. writing essays is about self expression and you should enjoy it to the full.
