Essay Writing Words

Ruby Said:

Writing an essay in my own words?

We Answered:

Try two things:

1 Word rearrangement. Take the original sentence and move a phrase to the first of the sentence or chop a long sentence down into two or more parts. When you have done this then.....

2 Use word substitution, such as make the subject another word that means the same, change the verb the same way or abbreviate an overly long sentence into a briefer one. Here's an example:

Sub words for subject and verb as long as they mean the same and abbreviate, cutting unnecessary words.

My second sentence conveys the same information in a slightly briefer form without plagiarizing the first.

Additionally, cut out unneeded words to make that paragraph(s) more easily comprehended by your reader.

Give it a try and see what you can come up with. Your second version of the first will be in "your own words."

Peggy Said:

Can i use the words we or our in a formal writing essay?

We Answered:

No, my english teacher gave us a sheet on the dirty dozens which refer to the 12 rules of writing; one of which doesn't allow us to write in first person. So I would stay away from using "I", "We", or "Our." But the teachers do appreciate you using third person sentences with an active voice meaning that your subject is always in control of your sentence.

Any good tips for writing a 200 words History essay?

We Answered:

First, arrange your points in a logical order. If one point leads to or implies another, place it before the implied point.

Now that you've got your points in order, state them as simply as possible in one sentence each. Now you've got a 7-8 sentence paragraph that states everything you want.

If some of the points are related to each other very closely, make them into a separate paragraph. It is good for you to have at least 2 or 3 paragraphs for an essay of this length.

Now all you have to do is flesh out each sentence with more detail. Continue to expand until you've reached your word limit.

EDIT:

Check out the Wikipedia entry if you're interested in WWI or any other history topic. That will give you a very thorough overview, which you can cherry pick for your purposes.
