Essay Writing Strategies

Robin Said:

Are there any teachers who have used or heard of an essay writing strategy using a four-colour pen?

We Answered:

I remember in a 20th century history course we were told to highlight in diff colors like that when reading. It really helped me realize what was textual evidence, arguement, and historical evidence. Which in return helped me when writing my own historical analysis. I'm assuming the general idea is the same the colors make you remember it a lil better and helps you break down the organization.
Great method :)

Do you have any tips/strategies for writing an essay in 25 minutes?

We Answered:

Make sure you answer the question fully and refer back to it, then it doesn't matter how long it is :)

What are your tips and strategies to radically revise an essay or form of writing work?!?

We Answered:

* Start early and budget your time.
* Clearly understanding the assignment.
* Organise your research materials and your thoughts.
* Learn by example - look for other essays on the topic for inspiration/understanding.
* Don't Plagiarise. Keep track of any quotes or citations.

Ask yourself:

* Does your introduction set-up the subject and the content?
* Does your conclusion clearly summarise what you have presented without brining-up new ideas?
* Does your essay make all of the points you set out to make?
* Does one idea flow to another?
* Does the language sound natural?

Ensure you have clarity of thoughts and economy of words.

Make sure you get your format and presentation right as they do count.

Last but not least, think differently: do you have an angle on the subject that differs from the tutor and sources you have read? This is what earns the highest marks.

Hope that helps :)

Do you have any essay writing suggestions for the personal statement on a med school application?

We Answered:

I think it might be a good idea to include things you have done (besides going to school and getting good grades), that show your dedication to helping others. Have you done any volunteer work? Have you participated in any extra-curricular activities which would improve your knowledge (in your field)? Think about yourself -- What is it about you that will make a good doctor? (patience, intellegence, desire to end suffering)
Try not to sound arrogant, but don't sell yourself short

What are some strategies for creating an effective essay title?

We Answered:

Don't create a title until the entire essay is finished, unless your one of those people who can come up with cool titles about anything. You might consider the fun/serious kind. Like if your is one evil for an english class something like...
Slay the Evil: What America Needs to do to Get Rid of Terrorist Threats.
The form of your title is important too, like all main words need to be capitalized but unimportant words don't need to be like the, to, and, of, etc.
Good Luck on the essay!
