Essay Writing Methods

Esther Said:

What methods did the police use in the case of Jack the ripper and to catch Peter Sutcliffe?

We Answered:

Well, obviously the murders were about a hundred years apart, so policing techniques had come a long way between Jack the Ripper and The Yorkshire Ripper.

The Police back in the late 1800s had very little in the way of science to help them, so there was no DNA evidence or fingerprint evidence - really, the only way of catching a criminal was if somebody had actually seen the crime, or if circumstances were obviously pointing to a specific person as the killer (ie. sombody with a grudge against a person is seen near the murder site, about the time of the crime, disposing of a blood stained weapon). It was almost impossible to catch someone who was good at covering their tracks and had no connection to the victims.

Fast forward to the 80s and the case of the Yorkshire Ripper, there were plenty of new methods for finding a killer - DNA and suchlike, but the Ripper was careful not to leave evidence on the scene. They even took him in for questioning a few times and always let him go due to lack of evidence.

One similarity between the two cases was the amount of interviewing that was done of potential witnesses. For the 1800s police that was literally all they could do, and they found some leads of a potential sighting and someone who believed they were an additional victim that had scared the killer away - but as you know these leads came to nothing.

The 80s police also found someone who had been attacked with a hammer by the Yorkshire Ripper but had survived, and she was able to give a description - but once again all the new policing methods and old-fashioned questioning didn't catch the killer.

In the end they only caught the Yorkshire Ripper by accident, as he was stopped for drunk driving. The police check on his car revealed that he was using false number plates. After he was brought in he was identified as a suspect for the murders due to his similarity to the surviving victim's description of her attacker. The police then discovered various weapons and a rope dumped by him at the time of his arrest.

So really, the Yorkshire ripper was caught by modern methods, but they had nothing to do with catching murderes and were actually for catching car theives.
