A Masters degree means you have 'mastered' a certain field. The thesis is to show how you have mastered it, and how you can contribute to that field (new ideas, expansions of older ones). It is not just getting skills. That is an associate's or bachelor's degree.

It depends on the school, though, as to how you go about doing the master's research project/thesis.

And, at least for the M.A. and the M.Sc., it is a lot more than just an essay. It is a large research project. Theoretically, it should be one that, with a little more revision, you could publish in a journal.
