To survive out of school one needs to be able to communicate. Writing essays in high school is one of the most common tools used to teach and develop communication skills. When writing essays one needs to keep in mind audience, organization, logic of arguments, and the main idea. It may seem pointless to write essays, and if that is the case, then you and/or your teacher are not assigning the correct types of essays. Think about the cover letter you have to write to get a job or the argument you have to build for your boss so you can get a raise...now do you remember writing persuasive and informational essays in high school? Everything is connected, and there is a method to the madness.

i think you should start off with an anecdote, it could be personal or general. the intro to a persuasive essay is very important as it sets the stage for the argument. think creatively ... if you're suffering from writers block.. go straight to the point and mention the benefits of the side you chose.

I think the best thing is to improve his writing skills and encourage him to express his thoughts nicely on paper and work on his vocabulary. once he gets into high school his teachers will introduce those different writing styles and different essay methods and all that. just encourage him to read widely, to practice using new vocabulary in his sentence constructions and that way he will improve his writing.
