Essay Writing Format

Eddie Said:

I am writing an essay in MLA format?

We Answered:

it depends on what your teacher wants you to do. if the essay is due tomorrow make a works cited page and bring it in just in case. otherwise ask your teacher tomorrow if it is necessary or check your mla handbook for specific information regarding this...it'll probably be in there, but it might ultimately be up to your teacher.

Essay Writing Format?

We Answered:

You can say either; the laws of English grammar always apply when you are writing a paper, no matter what format it is in (providing you are writing the paper in English, of course). Dr. is a perfectly acceptable abbreviation.

Good luck on your assignment. Maybe you could help me? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

Katie Said:

What exactly is "essay format" for writing a paper?

We Answered:

The essay format is an introduction, three main points (the body), and a conclusion. First, you state the three main arguments or reasons for you writing the paper. (exp. Llamas are the greatest pet, because they're friendly, calm, and good with other animals.)

The first point is stated and then explained in one paragraph or more, depending on if the essay is one page or 27 pages. State your stance on the issue, and explain your reasoning for that one point. (Llamas are friendly because...)

Points two and three are much like the first point. You give evidence to support your idea, and explain how it relates to your thesis statement (stated in the intro.). Examples are; Llamas are calm. For example... and; Llamas are good with other animals, as in the case of...

When you're done writing, check your paper for mistakes. If you're writing a persuasive piece, don't start with "I believe" or "I think." They sound weak and unimportant.

The conclusion should be quick, and done in the same style as the other paragraphs; however, you should be careful, as this is where most people ruin their essay. Restate the thesis. (exp. "This is why we should all have pet llamas...") Retrace your step in a summary when writing the conclusion. Don't add in any extra points. If your essay was about how llamas are the greatest pet, don't say how they are total mess-makers in the conclusion. If you want your essay to sound extra professional, avoid contractions, like I've for I have, or won't for will not. This usually isn't necessary.

BTW, this was written in the most common essay format.

When writing an essay in MLA format, how should the name of a ship be presented?

We Answered:

I'm pretty sure you can just put the name in italics and it will be fine. You should go ask your teacher that your writing the paper for, just because it's MLA doesn't mean they don't have specifics they look for themselves.

Alvin Said:

what type of format should I use when writing an essay in college astronomy class?

We Answered:

Yes, actually, there is a specific format. It's done in LaTeX, which is a document preparation software used by most scientists to write their papers. It takes some work to learn, or you could download LyX which is a front-end for it which makes it a lot easier to use. And they have versions for every operating system (astronomers used to use Unix, then most used Linux, and now many are using Macs).

And then you'll need a template for the article. LyX includes one called AASTeX. It will take some work to learn, so start early, but it makes all your work look really impressive, and your professor will definitely be impressed. If you want to continue in science, LaTeX skills are a must.
