Lee Said:

what happens if after writing an essay on, say, the AP lang exam, the student writes a note to the grader?

We Answered:

I remember taking the AP Calculus test (which I was grossly unprepared for) and I wrote "Isaac Newton himself could not solve this problem." I didn't do well on the test, but I think that was because I didn't know the subject, not because of my note.

I certainly wouldn't expect the AP grader to pity you and add points because of your note, but I doubt they would take points off. I bet they get this kind of thing a lot.

Kent Said:

does writing essays really help students learn?

We Answered:

Those who are better at math get better grades. Those who are better at sports get better grades in PE. It’s just the way it works.

But do essays help? The truth is that writing, in any form, helps you develop writing skills. Whether you are writing letters, chatting online, talking in forums, or writing essays, it helps you develop your writing skills.

However, there are theories, which I tend to agree with, that some teachers can inhibit their student’s development into good writers by making them hate the written word. Read “The Writers Way” by Jack Rawlins for a very good discussion of this topic.
