Essay Writing College Admission

Felix Said:

What advice would you give someone who is writing a college essay for admission?

We Answered:

Make it interesting. You should realize that you are not simply putting words on paper, but that you are communicating to an actual real-life flesh-and-blood person on the other side. That person will have been doing nothing but reading essays like yours for the last week and will do nothing but read essays like yours for the next week. He or she will probably have read 20 essays that night before yours and will have to read another 20 before they go to bed. They will be absolutely sicks of the typical essay that everyone writes: 'this is why I am important' or 'this is what I care about' or 'I had some challenge and I thought I would never make it through, but in the end I triumphed'. That is the person you need to communicate with. That is the person you need to impress.

So how do you do that? Well, you need to make sure that your essay is not like every single other one. You need to make sure that your essay will stand out amongst the sea of everyone else. Make it entertaining. Make it insightful. Make it interesting. But whatever you do, MAKE IT DIFFERENT. If you think other people will answer in the same way as you plan to, you should change your plan. And please keep in mind that you are talking to another human. You want them to connect to it and you want them to enjoy it.

Does writing something unique for your college admission essay really help?

We Answered:

There are some applications that do ask unusual questions. University of Chicago is notorious for having the most unique college prompts. The essay prompt for my honors college was very vague and thus allowed for the inclusion of more creative ideas. Some of these essay topics you heard of may have been for those more unique prompts.

Write about something important to you and write about it well. I was talking to an admissions officer and she said it's okay to have a normal life. Not everyone has overcome some huge hardship by the time they are 17, so it's not bad if you don't talk about your hardships. When I applied to college, my biggest hardship was being dumped by a boyfriend. Definitely not worthy of a college essay. So instead, I wrote about how attending a science lecture sparked my interest in research. I made my essay interesting, using vivid imagery and a bit of humor; it reflected my voice, my opinion. Even though the subject matter may seem boring, I wrote it in an interesting and not stereotypical way. Your essay is as much as getting to know you as it is seeing how well you can write.

Try writing down ideas for the different essay topics that are gtiven to you. Since you haven't stated which essay that you will choose, you have to decide that first. Think of past experiences, your likes/dislikes, influences, issues that are personal to you.

Or, you can register to essayforum.com and post it there for opinions from people online.

Make sure your work is read, revised, and edited by teachers or other people who you trust!JH

need help writing college admission essay....?

We Answered:

This should be easy and something you can answer. What do you think will be your challenges? Being away from home, meeting new people, challenging classes, stress, peer pressure? pick one, explain why you think it would be a challenge for you and how do you think you will overcome it.
