Bobby Said:

Can anyone help me find out who wrote this BBC Online article please? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6108496.st?

We Answered:

Use the website address and state the date it was published and the date you accessed it i.e. today.

That is normally fine for websites as they often do not state the author.

Emily Said:

Has anybody ever worked as a freelance academic essay writer in the UK?

We Answered:

I've not done it in the UK. I have a few friends who have written essays for some U.S. based sites. There's not much money in it. I think they got US$20-$25 for a three-page paper.

There is ethical issue to consider.

What you might consider is taking small ads in campus newspapers. Offer your services to edit, revise, etc. You'll get students who have the research and who cannot write for anything. Or you'll get half-written or completely written papers that are a mess. Clean them up at a per page rate. (I charged US$1-3 several years ago.) I did that all the way through school and did all right money-wise.

Hope this helps.

Wallace Said:

help on my essay? grammar check, proofread, thoughts and ideas?

We Answered:

“Events like the roman empire and king arthur were still thoroughly studied in history books everywhere.”

At that time, as today, it was not even known that King Arthur ever existed. He has NEVER been thoroughly studied in history books everywhere. Nor is the Roman Empire studied at all in history books everywhere. Then, as now, it was thoroughly studied only in history books of the Roman Empire or in long chronicles that attempted to cover all European history.

I doubt that many of those who wrote the constitution knew much Old English.

This is just rhetoric, and untrue rhetoric.

It is not TRUE that there is a rifle “behind every blade of grass” and never was.

“Was it not for the second amendment the people would not have been armed to defend against the British in 1812, also the Japanese or nazis might have invaded america in world war 2.”

Nonsensically written. You should write “Were it not”. You should capitalize “Nazis”, “America” and “World War”.

Second, if you believe that US citizens defended the US against the British in 1812, when the British set fire to the building that is now known as the White House, then you should give examples of when exactly this happened and what happened. Also, neither the Nazis nor Japanese came close to ever attempting to invade the US. Nor did they come close to invading Canada or Mexico which have no “second amendment” or anything parallel to it. What are you talking about?

More empty rhetoric.

The gun laws in Britain are mostly supported by the police and people. Is the best you can do to quote a single officer who disagrees? Britain is a democracy and if people wanted less gun control, they can vote for people who also want less gun control. But they don't. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_crime#H… which shows that the US is one of the most intentional homocide-ridden countries in the world.

So why don't you “armed American citizens” stop killing and maiming each other?

“... the armed American citizens have a duty to our country to step and defend it from any enemy, when and wherever they may arise.”

So when are you expecting an invasion from Canada or Mexico? How does allowing every nut to own guns make the normal person more secure? Surely you do not think that armed American citizens have a duty to kill each other?

Why do you not even consider the possibility of gun registration? Perhaps it wouldn't work, but you ought to indicate why, with evidence from other countries that have tried it, instead of putting forth a patriotic fantasy of people with hand guns standing up against bombing raids.

You can't paper over that the US is a more violent country than most others, because more people have guns. Sure, the guns don't kill people, but the people who have them do.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politic… for an example of a country where the militia is controlled: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politic… .

Your article looks like it was written based more on patriotic wish fulfillment than on any facts. Britain came MUCH closer than the US to being overrun by Nazis, and they have democratically supported gun control.

Julia Said:

When referencing an American writer if you're in the UK do you have to copy the way they spell in your essay?

We Answered:

Yes! Absolutely that picky. If it's wrong it's wrong after all....

Anyway. If you are using proper nouns, like a film title, you use the American spelling - so The Color Purple, for example. To change the spelling would be like spelling someone's name incorrectly.

If you are using direct speech, you should also use the American spellings (and words) - so 'Hank said: "I recognized the car by its open trunk".'

However, if you were using indirect speech you would use the English version: 'Hank told reporters he recognised his stolen car because the boot was open'

hope that makes sense!

Nancy Said:

If economies of scale are so beneficial to a firm, why are most firms in uk still small today?

We Answered:

You must make a profit in order for your business to expand. Making a profit is extremely difficult. For example, 9 out of 10 restaurants close within 3 years. They close , not because their food was bad, but because it is so hard to make a profit.
Only the businesses that make a profit can expand. That is where the economies of scale can enter. But first you must have a successful idea and a successful product.
If you have a huge factory and lots of workers but you are producing typewriters, the economies of scale don't help you.. computers have made your product obsolete. So profit is much more important than economy of scale..

Discuss It!
