Well you might start out by considering what makes a conversation successful according to the conversationees. Some are useful to obtain information. Others make friends. Others just make people feel better about things (psychotherapeutic). Some might give motivation to work better or live better. Some conversations are professional consultation. You could also consider that what makes some conversations particularly progressive, such as to break new ground or provide some kind of development.
People have totally different criteria as to what makes a conversations successful - compare research scientist, artist, school student in a lunch break, pub, friends in old age retirement.......
You might consider also that conversations have different stages (define), such that success requires navigating the stages successfully presumably providing a good future for the next one.
Cultural differences, age differences, conversations between same sex or different sex, sex attraction or otherwise. It may well be that "romantic" conversations between heteros & gays are different.
