A good way to start a letter/essay?

We Answered:

Tell them who you are, and then why you are writing. Then, talk about your academic achievements. Next, praise the school, and tell them it would be an honor to attend. In the next paragraph(s), focus on your achievements again.

Example:
My name is _____, and I am applying to attend ______ school. I believe I would be a valuable student because I have achieved many academic goals such as _______, _______, and _______. With all of these qualities, I would love to attend such an honorable and prestigious school.

As I stated before, I have achieved ________. I think this is a mark of a good student because ____. [continue similarly in the next paragraphs]

In conclusion i think I would be an exceptional student at ______ (school). This is because of my wonderful personality and charm. I have also met these goals: _______, _____, and _______. To be accepted would be a great honor and I hope to hear from you soon. You can call me at ______________ (state timings if needed) or email me at ___________. Thank you for considering me as a student at ___________.

Sincerely,
__________ (your signature)
__________(your full name)
__________(your current school for recomendations if required)

where to put a thesis statement when writing a letter essay ?

We Answered:

You're right on the money. Best not to put your thesis statement in the first sentence here. You are writing a letter to someone, the first thing you need to do is make it clear what you're writing about. You need to lead up to your thesis.

Start by talking about the general situation: lay out what the state of the colonies would look like 2 days after lexington and concord. How heavy were the losses? Are further battles breaking out? Are the rest of the colonies moving to follow the example of Massachusetts? Don't use up all your knowledge in the introduction, most of it should be within the body of the essay, but give a basic overview of the situation to precede your thesis.

All this is meant to build up to your thesis. Once you've built up a general description, give your opinion on how things look: can the british win it or not? Make the thesis the concluding thought of your first paragraph.

That's all you really need to know, but here's a little more. The strength of your thesis will depend a lot on how you lead up to it. If you are arguing that the british are doomed, talk about how your initial losses will "only magnify over time" as the colonists gain support. If you're arguing the british can win, focus on how lexington and concord are unimportant because the british army is large and well trained. You will surely win out over time. Mention Ireland and other british colonies: if you let America win independence it will weaken your foothold in all your other holdings. It will also make you look weak to foreign powers if you can't maintain your sovereignty. Talk about the necessity of victory.

So if you ask me, put your thesis at the end of your introduction.

Good luck on your essay, hope this helps.
