Draft, read, alter, write, read, re-write, read, rewrite, read, re-write!!!!!

Follow the basic formula in your draft, introduction:set the scene, introduce main characters, hint at plot. The plot thickens... things get worse/more complicated; crisis point; resolution. Have different 'strands' or substories going on - get the ending clear and link things from the beginning to the end.

When you have your first draft, read it aloud and alter where necessary. Write up the story, then re-check to improve the sentence structure swapping the sentences around or re-ordering a sentence to make good sentence starters. Listen to the rhythm of the words as you read.. reading aloud helps this. Remember to use an interesting mixture of long and short sentences.

Next, go through again, eliminating repeated words and checking for more interesting words with a thesaurus.

Read through again checking spelling, and continuity.
Make sure you have a powerful ending.

Can you add alliterations etc.
Make sure you have conversation/speech in the story at some stage
You may want to refer to the reader by asking a question...such as 'what do you think I did?' (or he did? etc) If you show you know how to use question marks, exclamation marks etc... in fact the full range of punctuation that you have learnt, you get extra points for each thing that you show.

Start some sentences with an adverb..(Suddenly..... or Surprisingly... etc) you get an extra point for showing you can use adverbs at the beginning of the sentence.

Practise putting examples of the grammar and punctuation you have been taught by writing several stories out prior to the exam, then it will be much easier when you come to do the SATs.
