Of late, there's been a groundswell of dissatisfaction expressed surrounding various issues that are probably being promoted for political reasons. This alone makes it difficult to locate a specific you might care to discuss.

I'd suggest you begin by determining a situation you find unacceptable. For me, it's the disconnection I see between today's youngsters and the eventual responsibility they will be forced to confront in the not-so-distant future. Now, if I were planning on writing a paper on this subject, I'd be appealing to both parents and school kids to consider the ramifications of indifference. I could get plenty of insight by meeting with a few school counselors, some clergy people and by plugging into a couple of public schools where I might be able to arrange a group assembly along with a short and simple handout that could help identify and possibly prove some of my earliest contentions.

Let's say I did this and now I'm thinking, "Boy, this is hopeless. How am I going to change something?"

Having said that, it's obvious to me that I could bring my findings to those same institutions I approached for help---schools & churches. There will be some responsible leaders in those institutions who will ask me what they and their resources can do to help forge new approaches to enable us to reach those kids on the periphery. Maintaining an ecumenical approach would be a given so as to avoid any slant.

On sum, sometimes it's necessary to dive into something head first before we can figure out where we're going. You know you want to identify the need that touches you emotionally. You don't know how to start because you haven't identified what it is that will trigger your own inner energies.

A dozen years or so ago, I was asked to bring Boy Scouts of America information into public schools. It was part of a training program in which I was participating. I met with the first group of boys and girls at an elementary school and I was immediately asked if girls could join; could special ed kids join also? That experience led me down a fascinating path that eventually led to my being invited to create a Summer camping program for forgotten youth. With plenty of community support, we helped establish a program known as "Special Needs Scouting." I had no idea any of this would ever materialize when I first dropped off some pamphlets for a friend who was an executive in the BSA. It turned into a life changing situation for countless kids, many of whom were intellectually challenged and unable to function past a 2nd grade level. Need I tell you that it was a life changing experience for me as well?

Educating people begins with figuring out how to reach them on the one level all humans can relate: The emotional level. After you identify that, you'll sail home. First things first: Decide what you want to see changed and dive in with your feelings for that is the only thing that will position you to inspire others.

I'm not just patting you on the back for the sake of encouragement, Rather, I'm appreciating the fact that you want to be persuasive and personal. As a writer, I know that everything begins with things that are personal. They're the blood and guts of our living moments. I tap into those moments most easily by challenging my comfort zone and pushing against the boundaries of my proverbial box. Similarly, you took the first step by presenting yourself here and taking a chance.
