Creative Writing Essays

Willie Said:

ok, for my creative writing class were doing narative essays and i was wondering if what experiance has ....?

We Answered:

Bah! Don't listen to the meanies talking smack about your writing skills.
Get off the computer, grab some sheets of blank paper from your printer and a black pen. Get comfortable and think about your life and the word impact. Write or draw the first things that come to mind. Spelling and handwriting do not matter at this stage. If your life has not been impacted yet, then explore that.
After you write your freehand idea sheets, write a rough draft. Then type and edit that, re-read and tinker and then final draft.

Emily Said:

Is it possible that being too creative with college admissions essays will be a disadvantage?

We Answered:

It depends on what "too creative" is...

I second the previous answer and definitely get your essay proofread by several sources--definitely have your current English teacher read it and go to the writing center (if your school has one) or, if possible, check out the writing center at the university you're applying to. They'll be able to guide you better than we can since we don't know the specifics. Good luck!

Nancy Said:

creative writing!?

We Answered:

There are lots of ways to use creative writing techniques when making arguments.

Use interesting stories or anecdotes. Tell a story about a person or people to support your argument. You can tell a story about yourself or your family, too. Just remember -- you can't rely on anecdotal evidence alone.

Use humor. Take your argument to a riduculous extreme or use a funny turn of phrase to make a point.

Build tension. Leave questions posed at the beginning of the essay unanswered and answer them gradually as you go along.

Discuss It!
