Analysis Essay Writing

Dennis Said:

What is the best approach to writing a analysis essay of a poem?

We Answered:

Discuss the poem under the following headings:

Outline of the meaning of the poem and the theme it is illuminating. Refer to the words of the poem.

Discuss the mood and feeling created by the poem. Refer here to poetic elements such as figurative language, poetic devices, sound, rhythm, rhyme, sense and impact on the reader.

Discuss the tone of the poem and the ultimate purpose of the poet and how the poet feels about his subject. Again refer to the figurative language which allows you to discern this tone.

Finally, give your personal response to the poem and assess its impact, importance and success or lack of success. A neat way of ending is to discuss here the title of the poem and your assessment of its meaning.

Gertrude Said:

with an analysis essay do you use direct quotations from the story you are writing from?

We Answered:

Very proper. You should always be referencing the book/story. You don't want to have too many quotes--putting things in your own words is also referencing the story--but you should have some direct quotes, especially in places where the particular words the author uses are really important. Be sure to cite the quotes (and the paraphrases)--usually with page numbers in parentheses right after or at the end of the sentence (but before the period).

Examples:

They "don't believe in family" even though they are close (29).

OR

They "don't believe in family" (29) even though they are close.

Either way is fine; I prefer the first because it's less distracting. If you are quoting from more than one author, then you will also need to put the author's name in the parentheses:

They "don't believe in family" even though they are close (Walker 29).

This style of citation is MLA style, standard for literature classes in the US. If your teacher specifically asked for a different style then the details will be different--but the basics are the same: yes, direct quotes, and be sure to cite them.
