Uk Creative Writing Courses

Gilbert Said:

Courses in UK universities?

We Answered:

Ok, this is what I found from a quick UCAS search. I think it would be hard to find a course covering specifically English Lit & Creative Writing, but these are English & Music, I'd advise having a look at the English courses to see what they cover (because they are very likely to contain creative writing and literature modules - but you might have to so some other English modules too!)

Bangor - English & Music
Bath Spa - Creative Writing/Music, English Lit/Music
Brunel - Engligh & Music
Canterbury Christ Church - English & Music
Cardiff - English Lit/Music
Chichester - English & Creative Writing and Music, English and Music
Keele - English and Music
Lancaster - English Lit & Music
Leeds - English and Music
S'hampton - English & Music
Sunderland - English Studies & Music, Music with English, English Language & Linguistics and Music

Hope that gives you a starting point!

B&A: For a cost of £343 ($535 USD) would you consider taking such a course?

We Answered:

No. Honestly, I wouldn't pay $100 for that. The B&A section here is a lot more valuable and it's free (regardless of the spam included). I know what it takes to achieve my goal of publishing a best-selling and I can do it without a class. Experience, writing for practice, reading for knowledge & guide on how to write better. You can easily (in most cases) access any help or advice you need for writing through the internet. What more do I need? Of course, there might be a few interesting things I don't know from that course and would not get to learn - but really? Paying $500+ for a few things I don't know isn't worth it.

I probably have similar resources at my school through English teachers. I'm sure that a proffesional writer could really help a bit more, but they don't do the work for you in your part of improving.

--Edit--

A TD - Could I at least know why from the thumbs downer so I can get a different opinion for my answer?

--Edit-2-

Aw, thanks, you didn't have to do that! ;) And really? That's so awesome! 'Silly Turtle' was actually kind of grew when I started calling everyone "silly little turtles" at my house... and they made me the turtle :P So how was your experience in the Air Training Corps - did you like it?

Publishing/Editing/Creative Writing Colleges/Universities?

We Answered:

Hollins University, a small private women's college in Virginia, has a major in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. (I go to Hollins and that's my major). We have creative writing classes/workshops, I know there's an Advanced Grammar class offered. The Creative Writing concentration is more focused on the creative aspect than the regular English major without the concentration.

University suggestions?

We Answered:

Yes there are, although I would suggest doing English literature with creative writing (like I'm doing!). Check ucas, as people have already mentioned, look at different universities requirements, go on their websites and look up the content of their courses, consider which part of the country you want to be in (is it important that you're close to home or do you want to get away?) and also take note of whether they are English with creative writing (language and literature) or just English literature with creative writing. Good luck!

Patricia Said:

Manchester university? (UK)?

We Answered:

I was there from 1998 - 2002. It is a really big uni, one of the largest in Europe. It is spread out all over the town, certainly not a campus uni. I remember walking for hours to get to lectures in different parts of the city.

Most of the students live in Fallowfield, Withington and Didsbury which is actually quite far from the city centre. You have to get a bus that takes about 30 mins to get to lectures. Accomodation is about 20% cheaper than in London.

The students are about 20 per cent public school and the atmosphere is Northern. Most of student body is from the North of England or Wales. Nothing like Oxford of Cambridge. e.g. The Uni has one of the largest % of ethnic minorities in the UK.

The teaching is very good. Amongst the best, but you will have to work hard. This is not a place to be spoon fed.

What else:

The gay mecca of canal street...if you are the sort of person to be offended by this sort of thing you might prefer somewhere more conventional .

Curries. The curry mile is a concentration of kebab and curry houses on the rusholme stretch of Oxford road. Good if you like that sort of thing.

Violence and crime. There is a fair amount of deprivation and there is a racial element to city life. The rioting in Oldham which is part of greater manchester did not spill into the student area to much, but Moss side is close to the Uni. I never had any problems in four years but walking around late at night and flashing the cash could lead to an incident.

If you can handle being a small fish in a big bowl then I think you will like it!
