Before turning to "what it's like" at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), I have a bit of information about and links to UCI's English Department and its "Creative Writing Emphasis" (fiction and poetry).

The Department of English is located within the School of Humanities. The Department offers a B.A. degree in English. The Department also offers what is called a "Creative Writing Emphasis"; however, a B.A. in "Creative Writing" is not offered.

The Creative Writing Emphasis is a 4-course emphasis attached to the Bachelor’s degree in English. For additional information please see:

I know that the "Creative Writing" courses are selective and excellent; that opportunities for an undergraduate student to write for publication are available; and that, like so many other institutions of higher education, the better creative writing curriculum is offered through UCI's internationally known and admired graduate M.F.A. program in Creative Writing. Nevertheless, as an undergraduate, you will have ready access to a truly outstanding faculty all of whom publish fiction and/or poetry regularly. As to the campus, UCI is a world-class research and teaching university in what you know is a wonderful Southern California location. As you know, her location benefits from an incomparable climate to an appealing range of stores, dining, & other activities - from major theme parks, beaches, hiking, water sports to professional theatre and cultural venues.

It is a campus with approximately 27,000 students. The campus is an active cultural center, with a remarkable number and variety of public events and performances. I should add the campus facilities are amongst the best available.
