Scholarships Creative Writing

Rosemary Said:

What are the best University's in the south that offer Creative Writing and English lit. majors?

We Answered:

The best colleges in Florida are U Florida, Florida State, New College of Florida, Rollins College, Stetson U, and U Miami. I have no idea which of those offer your majors - you'd need to check that. But I wanted to list them for your consideration, because they 1) rank with or above UNC Wilmington and 2) they are really good schools and 3) they are in Florida, so you can use your scholarship.

All of those colleges are regionally accredited, which is the type of accreditation you want of any school you consider.

Creative writing is not my area of expertise, so I can't recommend specific colleges in your region. But some that I know have excellent, truly great English lit programs include Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, U Virginia, and U Texas Austin. In addition to those, plus the colleges in Florida I listed, I'd also have you look at Davidson College, Washington and Lee, Furman U, Sewanee - U of the South, U Richmond, Centre College (KY), Rhodes College (TN), Agnes Scott, and Wofford College.

When you apply to colleges, apply both to those in FL, where you can use your scholarship, and to those outside the state, where you really want to go. See where you get in, see what aid they offer you, then decide.

I need some input for my future career from outsiders: what can I do with writing?

We Answered:

Take every class you can get. If you haven't taken any courses in creative writing, you'll need them. You'll be surprised at what can learn. Also, try to attend a writing conference or join a writers' group. Other writers will be an an inspiration and a wealth of information.

Start researching online for websites that accept short stories or poetry and try to get published that way. Any credits will look good on a resume. Check out www.stellarshowcasejournal.com. I have published with them before.

Good luck!

I'm returning to university and interested in PRIVATE grants, scholarships. Any info anyone?

We Answered:

Most college financial aid offices have a list of private scholarships listed on their websites. High school guidance offices are another source. The final source is using the free membership college scholarship search engines. I have listed some below.

Opinions on creative writing piece.?

We Answered:

Michelle:

I think your creative writing piece is quite good. I especially like your prose. I am no expert writing critic but I would not change much. The only thing that I can think of to mention is the last word in the piece, 'Why". I ask myself why is 'why' in there. You may consider deleting that very last word and ask yourself how the piece sounds without it in there. I know that's rather pickie but the very end of a piece of writing can also be the most important.

BTW, I am a hobby writer who aspires to be published some day. I like meeting other people who want to find recognition for their writing as well. Look me up if you want. Don't be a stranger!
