Jessie Said:

Which college would be best for me?

We Answered:

No colleges at Oxford specialise in your majors for two reasons:

Firstly, Oxford and all other universities in the UK don't operate in the same way as those in the US. We don't study a range of subject and then 'major' and 'minor' in two. Here, when we apply to university we do so to study one subject (or in the case of joint honours two subjects) and when we get to university that subject is all we study for the whole 3 or 4 years. Therefore, you won't be able to 'major' in anything at Oxford.

Secondly, Oxford doesn't offer the type of subject's you're looking at studying. Oxford is a highly academic institution and as a result tends to teach only highly academic subjects. Creative writing and teaching aren't, shall we say, the type of thing that Oxford offers. If you want to see what courses you can study there take a look at the link below:

Francis Said:

What do I need to get into a prestigious university for an MA course?

We Answered:

Grad school is not about your being a member of the 4-H club. It is about academic excellence. If you do anything extra-curricular, it should relate to the particular field in which you are applying. In your field, writing for a local paper, taking an internship with a publisher or volunteer teaching English at an immigrant center are impressive.

Best of luck to you. Know that if your intent is to become a writer, it is a path fraught with frustration. To make a living, don't count on your written words alone to take you there. Find a commercial outlet for your talents to put food on the table while you are plotting out the great English novel of the 21st Century.
