What's a good novel writing software?

We Answered:

My recommendation is to avoid using your computer altogether for the first draft. Handwrite it and give yourself either a time limit or page limit (or combine to do a page limit in a certain amount of time). If you want to transfer your finished work to your computer using a word processing program afterwards, do so. In the long run, software isn't the issue. It's learning to make writing your job that you do every day. Consistency is the key. Don't worry about what you are writing. The rewriting can come later. Give yourself permission to write the worst stuff on earth. Writer's block is a conflict between your inner editor and your creative mind.

Joan Said:

A question about novel writing software?

We Answered:

I have used that software...

I think it's a good way for some writers to stay organized...

That said, I don't use it. I found, that using word, works best for me. Easy to format, PDF, overall a stronger platform for me. After using the writing software, I went back to my old system...pictures of settings, characters, maps etc pinned to my board on my wall. My binder, (dollar store) filled with all my info (time-lines, character traits,)

The software guides the writer through canned plot formats. That didn't work for me, as a rarely plot out a book in the first draft.

I think all writers have their own systems. I'm not knocking the software at all. I think it's up to the individual.

Tom Said:

What is the best software for novel writing?

We Answered:

Try Whitesmoke, a CNN/NBC-featured writing software. It has 4 different software modules for General Writing, Business Writing, Creative Writing (including novels) and an Executive Pacakage.

Maria Said:

Can you recommend a reliable, virusfree novel writing software?

We Answered:

I'd never use writing software. Just word processing. Any kind is fine. If you do not have Word, WordPerfect, or anything else, you can get free word processing at Open Office. It's perfectly adequate for writing novels.
