You know, there is such a thing as literary SF and Fantasy but even if your fondest dream is to write only the pulpiest of genre you could still be well served by the deep grounding of an MFA. Bear in mind that you will be required to write outside of your comfort zone if you pursue this degree.

All that being said, I'm not sure it's a great idea either. My (limited) understanding is that most people with MFAs in creative writing are far and away more likely to teach than they are to become publishing sensations. Were I you I would do further research on the pros and cons of this degree in relation to your personal aspirations.

If you like the academic environment enough to want to become a teacher, then an MFA could be an excellent investment for you. Other than that, it's definitely a degree you pursue more out of love and the desire to immerse yourself in a workshop environment than practicality.

In addition to the excellent suggestions above, some schools have writers' "colonies" that give you a chance to do nothing but write and associate with fellow writers for a few weeks or months. You might want to consider looking into one of those and giving it a try to see whether this really is something you want to focus on.
