Of course you can.

You will still have to go through the application process and everything since they're two different programs; the transfer from one to the other won't be automatic. (Of course, this goes without saying if you switch schools, but I'm reading this as staying at the U of Iowa for both.)

Likewise, it's also possible at a lot of schools to be a professor of creative writing with just the MFA (though that may be hard if you don't have any publications to go with it). Of course, you will open more doors for yourself and be an all-around more attractive candidate if you also have the English PhD.

What people don't know is that you don't need a degree in education... Yes yes it's strange but really all you need to be a teacher is teaching credentials... Don't waste your time majoring in education use your time majoring in English if you're trying to be a creative writing teacher... And to get to a higher level such as college all you need is your masters... as for university you'll need a PHD or somewhere along the lines of that, but you can have your masters as a university teacher, but PHD is preferred... Major in English or w/e you would for creative writing... And experience as a teacher makes you a better candidate for college!!!

The BA is an academic degree that includes about 50% general education courses and 50% courses in your major. Creative Writing is rarely a BA major - instead you'd major in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. (or Comms with Technical Writing for non-fiction)

The BFA is an academic degree (usually in an applied art such as studio art, theater, music, or writing) that requires about 25% general education coursework and about 75% coursework specifically in the studio major. It most often requires creative coursework - in CW that would be actually creating writing as opposed to analyzing other people's literature.

The MFA is a graduate degree (requires a bachelor's degree before entry) that concentrates entirely (100%) on creation of the art. It also often includes a teaching component specifically in the art. An MFA is the terminal (highest) degree in the studio arts and usually requires between 2 and 3 years beyond the bachelor's degree. While most master's students will conduct research and write a thesis (very long paper) as their final requirement for their MA or MS -- the MFA student will be expected to present a portfolio (or performance) of his art. We're talking professional quality, publishable writing here.

A lot of schools have MFA programs (too many to list here; try doing a search), and most of them won't disqualify you because of your undergraduate background, as long as you've taken some English courses. But your portfolio will need to be even more outstanding than the already highly competitive entries from native speakers who've had an undergraduate focus in the subject, and you're really going to limit your options if you refuse to take the GRE. (If you did so well on the TOEFL, I'm not sure why you'd refuse anyway.)
