Would I be able to get into a highly competitive college based on science like MIT?We Answered:
Hello, your resume is very good and would be very impressive at most colleges. However, MIT is strenuous to get into, and just about any other really top-notch college such as Princeton, Harvard, Yale, etc. The amount of stuff that MIT looks at is unbelievable. Even if you got a 2400 on SAT and 36 on ACT, that doesn't mean you'll get into MIT. MIT especially looks for really great achievements that you've done. AKA inventing and patenting something, winning the Intel Science Fair, publishing a popular book, etc. Your resume looks really great, don't get me wrong. But MIT is among the best colleges in the world, and will expect your resume to be "out of this world." I'll tell you that you can consider a university like GA Tech. GA Tech has a spectacular engineering program, being the best in the US outside of Harvard, MIT, Caltech, and Stanford. It also has the best engineering school that is not super-impossible to get into, that has reasonable tuition, and that has a decent acceptance rate (56% the last i checked). You can check with US News and World Report to find the best colleges in each particular area. (BTW, i'm not at all trying to discourage you!)To boost your resume, you need to have a VERY high score on the SAT and/or the ACT. Personally, I think the ACT is easier, but by no means is it easy. Of course, a very high GPA is always a good thing. But aside from that, you really need a truly amazing accomplishment such as winning the Intel competition or a similar competition, inventing something, writing a book, winning a Doodle 4 Google, etc.Hope this helps!

What are UK university admissions representatives looking for in an application essay/statement?We Answered:
You could try emailing the university you're interested in and asking them what they look for. I'm sure if you explain you are unsure of the system they use that they could give you a few pointers at the very least.Jerry Said:
The Harry Potter series of books by J K Rowling? We Answered:
The word "Phenomena" is thrown around a lot in publicity, but I think that for what happened in the case of Rowling's success, it is the right word. She doesn't have the most original premise, but somehow there's been a reception from audiences that bonds because of that, something that almost says "I could've/should've thought of this". But she also did the leg work of filling in what would otherwise be a series of themed pulp novels. I think that she succeeded by not trying to be more than a simple story of a simple everyman (or everyboy). However I think that what caught everyone's attention is the that story itself, which tried to keep so simple, was made up of very accessible mythology the way that the first Star Wars showed up on the scene. When the books started selling, then the promotional machine had something to work with and made it a monster. But the problem with anyone trying to achieve the success that she did will seem like an imitator and will fail. even she couldn't have achieved what she did without doing it accidentally, just like George Lucas couldn't recreate the same magic that he had set in motion with Star Wars if he wanted to. They were both the right people, with the right ideas, with the right work ethic, at the right time. There are other forces at workTerrence Said:

Attending university in another country? (So many questions lol)?We Answered:
It might be possible to do a joint honours- search courses on ucas.ac.uk (that's also where you'd apply). It will be very expensive, but there may be some support available from institutions in Canada- as you're a Commonwealth student there may be organisations willing to give you some support. You are unlikely to get any financial support from your university, although you will be able to work 20hrs a week during the term, and full time during holidays. It might be worth asking your school advisers for advice.
At the University of Manchester tuition fees alone are:
International students 2011 entry:
Arts - from £11,700
Science - from £14,700
Clinical - from £26,800
Most university students don't have a car- I have friends in Manchester and they mostly walk or use buses (taxis in groups when coming back late from a night out). Lots of people feel a bit lost when they move to a new city- you'll get used to it in no time.
You probably could use your debit card, but to save on the costs of transferring money from Canadian Dollars to Sterling you'd probably open a British bank account.
It is possible. I know lots of international students who do it, but you'll need to save a lot, have your parents support and get excellent grades. Start looking at universities' websites and decide if its really what you want to do. Your other options are to study in Canada and do a year abroad studying in the UK, travel to the UK on a gap year, or decide to look for work here after you've graduated. I think you're making a brave decision and are very sensible looking so far in advance. Don't let people tell you its impossible, but recognise that it will take a lot of commitment. Good luck!
