How useful is an MA in Creative Writing?

We Answered:

I'm looking into an MA in Writing program, as well. The usefulness of higher degrees depends on many factors. Teaching seems the most obvious. Unfortunately, if you're a writer who likes to "hide" behind his/her work (like me:), then teaching may not be for you. You could also develop a taste for research and purse a PhD in communication research if you completed your MA in creative writing. Research is always respectable/professional, even communications research. And writing degrees can be applied to places you wouldn't normally think of--like in technical writing $$$ (depending on your skill set), advertising agencies (writers are also creators!!), and basic corporate, cubical farm places. If you want to write, don't waste money on it. If you want to publish and feel good about having education coming out of your butt, feel free to pursue. Does education make you feel happy or confined? You will always be a writer in spite of your educational background. Remember, grad school is work work work. Sometimes, too much school can ruin writing. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy...

If you like writing, I wholly recommend subscribing to writing magazine and writers news
http://www.writersnews.co.uk/main/wm.asp
- it has everything about writing in the uk, markets, competitions, publishers- all types of writing covered- novels, plays, poetry, TV scripts etc. Loads of success stories- subscribers getting published etc- from women's magazines to novels and travel writing, children's books and biographies etc.

I've done an ma- not in writing but in arts related topic- can be expensive to do- there are other avenues into writing- although I'm sure an ma would be very interesting in that subject.
