Ma Creative Writing

Norman Said:

I am looking at MFA and MA English/Writing programs, any advice?

We Answered:

I suggest considering what you might want to do career-wise if you earned an MA or MFA and couldn't immediately earn a real living through writing and teaching college.

Try message boards for writers and instructors/academics and learn more about the degrees, what it takes to earn them, and what people do once they have them.

Creative writing: yes or no?

We Answered:

In my humble opinion (note: this is only what I think), they are really overrated. To be honest, you need to be born a writer. You can be taught the technicalities to a certain extent but if you are already a writer, a creative writing program will merely be like a revision period.

Nicole Said:

Can one earn a doctorate in creative writing, or is MFA the highest you can go?

We Answered:

You can absolutely get a doctorate in creative writing. One such program is at the University of Denver. Just do some creative searching at your local university library in the resources available on Ph.D. programs (ask the librarian where to find these resources), and then ask questions of the programs that look interesting. That way, you'll find one that will fit your needs. As for teaching literature, by engaging in creative writing, you are creating literature. Literature can be the doorway for someone else to explore the world of creative writing. Good luck!
