What's Syracuse, New York and Syracuse University like?

We Answered:

Syracuse is a large city in Central New York. It snows there. A lot. There are lots of things to do there and lots of malls and shopping if that is your thing. It is within a hundred miles of Albany, and Canada for that matter. It is NOT a small town. SU is a very well respected university.

What do u think?

We Answered:

Sounds like you have a good plan. Keep your grades up and don't limit any opportunities. You may yet find another interest along the way that might take precedence over your current plan so it is always best to keep your options open. But, it is very good to have a plan now. It is easier to reach your goal if you plan ahead.

I would still take courses to qualify you for a regular university as well as your preferred schools. Other universities often have good art, film and writing programs. And, some have good culinary programs too. If a scholarship or grant is important, it is best to have a selection of schools to apply to. See who offers you the better deal.

If you are interested in art/writing, consider joining the school yearbook staff or school newspaper. The radio stations sounds like fun, too. Any would give you a good background in media and media production. Important things to know if you want to promote your own restaurant. The debate team or working as stage crew for a school play also gives you good experiences. But, alas, you can't do everything, so give you self some wide ranging experiences.

It is good to start talking to counselors early. Find out what types of scholarships are available and what is needed to apply for them. Some take essays, so the sooner you start learning about what types of scholarships are out there, the better chance you have to be prepared for them when the time comes.

The idea about checking to school websites to determine entry requirements is also an excellant idea.

Best of luck. And, don't forget to have fun too.

Out of these colleges, what are the top 5 best?

We Answered:

1. Columbia
2. Johns Hopkins (there's an "S" in Johns)
3. Cornell
4. Amherst
5. Williams

Carolyn Said:

Are these good colleges?

We Answered:

The ones with the best reputations that you've listed are Cornell, Columbia and John Hopkins. This does NOT mean the other schools aren't good. You shouldn't always look at the rankings/reputation of the school because it boils down to what you're majoring in. Some schools might not have great reputations/rankings but they have certain specific programs that they're known for.

I would recommend that you look into:
- Bates
- Wellesley
- Smith College
- Mount Holyoke
- Simmons
- Amherst College
- UMASS Amherst
- Tufts
- Middlebury
- Wesleyan
- Boston College
- Boston University
- Claremont McKenna
- Pomona
- Miami University (in OH not FL)
- Oberlin
