As the person above has stated, it is a very long and arduous process to get permanent residency in Australia for a professor. Maybe look into more high need fields...? Nurses are needed in almost every part of the world, and if you have a good degree w some experience you could potentially find a job anywhere (and make a decent salary too!)

Also, keep in mind that many American companies have employees who live overseas. The process is not as difficult for these workers as they are technically still paid by an American company and are therefore not 'stealing' the job of a native citizen. My brother works in middle management for an American sales company based in Chicago but w operations in Sydney (he is in his mid-twenties w only a couple years experience) and he was offered a job in Australia (of which he turned down, but several of his colleagues have moved there). So that is always an option.

But it seems (as far as in my own experience w the people i know) the easiest way to move overseas is to just flat out marry a citizen of that nation. I have several friends who have married British, New Zealand, etc citizens and are now living abroad. As soon as the marriage is legit then BAM! they have a visa and are living the high life in a foreign land (kind of). Of course, you need to meet someone and determine they are compatible and agree to marry (love is usually a factor too). Only problem is there's way more Americans than there are Australians (or other nationalities) so the chances of you meeting one and he liking you as much as you like him aren't too good, but you never know! (Also, being the girl that guys go GaGa over tends to help as many of my friends who have married foreigners tend to be the types that can get any guy they want. Lucky! haha)
