Freelance Writing Course

Claudia Said:

How do you get into Freelance Writing?

We Answered:

What kind of freelance writer do you want to be?

The best way to become a writer is to write. I am sure you heard it all before. Build up a clip file by writing for small magazines for payment in copies. Just do a search on google for Small circulation magazines. Research your magazine before submitting and just submit.

The bet way to build up a clip collection is to write for online site. Submit articles, at least you will clips that will show your writing style. Start a blog on a topic you know well.

As for schools for writing, I would write first, build up at least 5-6 publishing credits and then look for a school. You can't really LEARN to write. 90% of writing is just doing it.

Rick Said:

how do you get into freelance writing without having to pay for courses?

We Answered:

Depends what kind of writing you mean. I would suggest start building a portfolio of articles/pieces then bombarding the people you think might like them.

There's a big call for optimised copywriting at the moment. This is basically where you write pages for websites and include as many key words/phrases as you can. I did that till recently and did pretty well.

Freelance Writing - I want to ghost write!?

We Answered:

Why not get credit when it's due? Ghostwriting is a perfectly honorable profession.

You should also get paid for your work, but that's not likely to happen unless you have a resume of sales in your folder. No one is going to hire a writer who doesn't have a history of earning money for his/her writing.

It is NOT an easy job, either. Three of my writer friends--with considerably more experience than you--took on ghostwriting jobs and lived to regret it.

In all cases the person they wrote with and for proved to have absolutely no clue about how to tell a coherent story. They would make changes, contradict statements, forget stuff, and generally make the writing a living he&& for the ghostwriter.

Since the customer is always right, the ghostwriter had to keep quiet and take the abuse.

It is to be noted that all three books did not have the ghostwriter's names on them. The ghosts TOOK their names OFF the books because they didn't want to be associated with anything so badly written!

You can learn more about the job ops on this writer's board:

Oh, yeah, the money is NOT that great. You'll make more writing your own books.

Where can I find a good quality pen for a writer?

We Answered:

Most writers find pens a very personal thing . . .how it feels in the hand . . . how the pen feels as it moves across the paper . . . how the ink flows from the pen . . . the color of the ink . . .

I know that this sounds strange but many writers have a very intimate connection with what they use to write.

Take your boyfriend to an office supply store. Tell him you need something, say that you are looking for a pen for someone else or whatever. Have him help you pick one out. If he won't help you then buy a gift card and while he is standing there, hand it to him and tell him why you are giving him the card. (My fiance is stubborn and I have had to do this with him in the past when I was trying to surprise him with something and he wasn't helping me make the choice for him.)

BTW, I think it is a very thoughtful gift and I hope your boyfriend appreciates you as much as you appreciate him.
