I am a technical author for computer magazines and also edit articles and books. In addition I write poetry and devotional meditations for church and other Christian organizations. Add into that articles for car restoration magazines.

You need to keep working on honing your skills and take every opportunity to enter writing contests, work on the school newspaper, etc. Try a lot of different writing types and see what you like.

Freelance is a tough gig. I have had a fair amount of success at it but honestly could not live on that alone. You might find that your writing will not be your occupation but your hobby.
