What would be a good classic story to re-write for an assignment?

We Answered:

"The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, but set in present-day.

You could have fun replacing the gift items: combs (for woman who sold her hair); and watch-chain (for man who had sold his watch) with more 21st Century items. Note the irony of the gifts = no longer fitting reality because each person had sold the item whose absence made the sacrificed-for return gift useless.
