I'm certain that different people view it different ways.

English Comp I was OK, but the teacher was old and ready to retire. She didn't want any surprises, innovative plots, or expressive ideas, just "propah English, clahhss!"

For myself, Comp II and Creative Writing were the best classes I have ever taken. The teacher encouraged us to read using our emotional perception to bring life to essays and tales. Not only did I learn a great deal about building dramatic and narrative situations, she recruited myself and two others to tutor some who were having trouble. It was a ball!

It really depends on the med school. I do understand what you are saying about having a plan to fall back on: med school is VERY competitive.

You may want to speak with a pre-med adviser at your college. He or she will hopefully a) be able to give you a clear answer on your English major and b) advise you on which classes to take to prepare for your MCAT's.

Good programs are at: UCLA, Kenyon, University of Iowa, Occidental College, Northwestern and Vassar College.

The more general your course, the better are your employment prospects. Not many people want to employ an English graduate as such, unless it is for teaching English. All you can prove is that you are capable of learning and passing a degree course.
