Wow great question. It would seem to me that the fine arts -- be it sculpture, painting, music, creative writing -- is a proper part of a liberal education. An academic training in one of them is of course another matter. It would seem that majority opinion has come down on the yes side. I know that at my institution what has happened is that creative writing has combined with cultural studies to marginize those doing traditional study of English literature, even those doing it in very post-modern ways. There is some sympathy among them for breaking away and joining History and Philosophy in a Humanities cluster.
