Roland Said:

Are there any good universities for creative writing?

We Answered:

Point Park University is great and is a small liberal arts school, if your into that. It has a great creative writing program. It is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I think Kenyon College would be a good fit. They have a English major which focuses on Creative Writing. It is in Gambier, Ohio. It is very rural and it snows a lot. It is known around the US as one of the best liberal arts college's. Good Luck!

Northwestern*
Columbia*
Pitzer
Wash U St. Louis
Hamilton*
Emory
Oberlin*
Pepperdine
Emerson
Franklin & Marshall
U Michigan

The best colleges for writing--whether or not they have a Creative Writing major--are:
Kenyon
Oberlin
Bard
Sarah Lawrence
Vassar
Wesleyan
Yale
UC Berkeley
Amherst
Middlebury
UNC Chapel Hill
Johns Hopkins

What are the best colleges/universities for creative writing majors?

This is not spam, but check out Tom Kealey's book, something about "the creative writing handbook" its a great resource to start with.

A lot of people will mention the University of Iowa, as they have historically been a very good school for CW, however, there are many other options.

I can't tell if you are an undergrad or grad, so I am going to assume undergrad. If you are a grad, then you need to def. check out Kealey's book (and blog).

I have heard great things about:
U of Washington
U of Oregon
U of Montana
Arizona state university
U of Virginia
U of cali

However, I think the most important thing is getting good professors, and I would recommend checking out some programs and finding some writers you like who are also teaching.

The one school I will suggest staying away from is Columbia University. CU is to creative writing as vanity press is to publishing. You pay, pay, pay.

Discuss It!
