Creative Writing Tips

Larry Said:

anybody with creative writing tips for self-studying the danish language?

We Answered:

Yeah, look for little connects. I mean I can read a bit of Danish but my focus was more on Norwegian. I got a good book, and learn the sound connections to English (and there are a whoooooooole lot). I also found ways to look for cognates between that and German even.

Maybe if you show me some stuff you are working on I can show you how it might help you.

Creative writing tips for 7-8 year old!?

We Answered:

It really depends on the level of the child. I would start out with something fun- such as "Write about the best thing that has ever happened to you" or have them make up a story that you work on for a while. Start by brainstorming about a story idea, then develop characters, work on the beginning, the rising action, climax, and conclusion. They key thing is to make writing really fun for this age and something they are interested in. Try to relate it to the child. The most important thing is to be super encouraging and positive, especially at this age. I have worked with elementary children for a while and the best thing to to do is switch it up. Incorporate drawing and movement, just make it fun.

Creative writing tips?

Any way of finding out who is auditioning you and garnering information about what fiction they enjoy and then reading up on it. For any audition/interview knowledge is always the strongest attention grabber. Even if you hate the stuff, you'll have at least read a few extra books, and reading multitudes of different books only aids a writer, as people keep quoting, to write you have to read, and read a lot.

Any tips to get my creative writing juices flowing?

We Answered:

Inspiration comes from millions of places: Music is indeed a big one (as someone said before, good/strong lyrics can provide a good jumping off point), watch a program on the history channel and change the central facts to fit something you like (i.e. once while watching a documentary about the mafia, I became engrossed. Well, writing about La Cosa Nostra can be an overwhelming project; you have to research the lifestyle, the people, and so forth. So I created a story on a much smaller scale about a street gang with a strong sense of order), walking in a place that is strange to you (make sure it's a safe place though) can trigger ideas, pick an article out of your newspaper and fictionalize it, dreams are good to spur on creativity.

Finally, take a simple situation (such as a mother/father and her young child going to the store) and imagine if one thing went wrong (an accident, a robbery, witnessing a crime, etc.) and then then write the story about how the original simple task can get more and more complicated.

There are a hundred more, perhaps thousands. Just keep your eyes peeled and you'll see things and hear things.

Good luck.
