College course/degrees where Maths isn't part of the syllabus at all?

We Answered:

Most of the arts faculty courses involve very little maths with the possible exception of some archaeology courses which can involve statistics.
All science and engineering courses involve some maths, even biology, and most social science courses involve statistics.
I'm not sure about librarianship but this is often coupled with a lot of IT these days.
Business tends to involve economics = maths.
Law doesn't but the entry is pretty steep.
Why not try an evening Arts ACCESS course and see what turns you on, better to spend a year finding out than make a mistake which will cost you good money these days.

What kind of colleges can I hope to get into?

We Answered:

Hi Roojanie

Take the TOEFL. From your question and your SAT scores, you will probably do quite well but you still have to submit the score on that to most colleges in the US.

Your SAT score is very good.
Stop worrying about your GPA - it is what it is and I think most Admissions Committees discount them anyway - what is 4.0 at one school might be 2.9 at another.

Find good schools likely to admit you at one of these free online college search services:

collegeboard.com

princetonreview.com

cappex.com

Apply to at least three of the schools that are likely to admit you. That way you have some choices.

Jamie Said:

What class and books would you teach if you could choose?

We Answered:

I would teach a World Literature class based on Nobel Prize winners - excluding the USA winners. Then I'd research other reputable prize winners to find other non-English, but translated into English, writers from other cultures.

I read a well-known Vietnamese woman writer, whose name I can't remember, whose writing was stunning. The Egyptian Mafouz, who won a Nobel Prize, is also great in understanding Egyptian/Muslim culture. Tagore is marvelous for Indian culture.

I once did a research paper on travel literature. My conclusion was it is best to read the culture's writers, rather than an outsider's opinion.

Is class usually held in English classes when there are editing appointments scheduled that day?

We Answered:

The policy varies by school. Ask your professor./

How can I find out which books are on the GCSE English Syllabus?

We Answered:

I'm out of date Skids - but last I knew - we had a number of different "Examining Boards" with different syllabuses - so you might need to check which exam your son will be taking before you can ascertain which set books are on the list.
English Literature always used to involve a Shakespeare Play - a Jane Austen and a Dickens' work - plus poems of various origin - but I suspect much has changed of late.
Your step-son's school should be able to confirm.

How can I find out which books are on the GCSE English Syllabus?

We Answered:

Your easiest way and what I would recommend would be to contact his teacher as they can study a variety of books in GCSE English at the teachers discretion.

Alternatively if you can find out what exam board your sons schools English department uses you can download the syllabus from their website and that should list all the possible options.
The three most common ones are:
AQA/NEAB: http://www.aqa.org.uk/
OCR: http://www.ocr.org.uk/
EDEXCEL: http://www.edexcel.org.uk/home/
