Creative Writing Phd

Lauren Said:

Which are the top 5 universities in the US of A to do ones' MFA/Phd. in creative writing?

We Answered:

Brown University
University of Michigan
Indiana University Bloomington
New York University
Boston University

Tony Said:

what do I need to become a creative writing lecturer? I have a Masters in CW, is a phd the mini. requirements?

We Answered:

Well an MBA is a business degree, so no to that. If you are wanting to work at a university you are most likely going to need a Ph.D. But at a 2 yr school you only need a masters.

PHD In Creative Writing?

We Answered:

You can't get a Masters or PhD as an undergrad. They are graduate degrees. You need a bachelors first.
It's just like how you need too complete high school before you can move onto college.

Andrew Said:

I am majoring in journalism and want to be a secondary school creative writing teacher. Is this possible?

We Answered:

I cannot answer all of your technical questions, but I can address the classes part. Most likely, you will not be able to "choose" which classes you want to teach (at least it is my experience in 5 different states of teaching or education). You will simply be placed into a class where they have the need and with a class like writing, you might have to fight some teachers with more seniority who also want to teach a class like that.

Secondly, with No Child Left Behind, electives like creative writing are not as prevalent in the high school curriculum as they were when you and I were in high school. We have not offered that course in five years because "we" (and I mean the school system) is focused on getting students to pass standardized tests and do well on the SAT.

That being said, I would like to suggest this: market your journalism skills to trade/tech/vocational high schools. I currently teach in a vocational high school where students have a choice of 8 vocations. Our school offers media production as our journalism trade. You might find it easier if you approach your desire to teach at this angle.

Last note--and don't quote me on this--my friend completed a residency program while teaching. The class and work load of the courses PLUS teaching was extremely overwhelming and it was the worst two years of her life. She had to take night, weekend and summer classes to complete the teacher residency program. It eventually led her to having to miss work for several days because of sheer exhaustion. Just a word of advice.
