Creative Writing Online Class

Cassandra Said:

What is the best online college in the state of North Carolina?

We Answered:

The UNC system of online programs is here --> http://online.northcarolina.edu/document…

You need some direction before you start spending money on classes. The two career plans you cite don't require a college degree at all - they require talent. College is simply where you will develop and refine that talent.

By all means, take courses in those areas that interest you. It sounds like you have a great academic interest. Knowing "stuff" is always good. Getting a degree requires a specific plan and goal. You can earn an associates degree online through the NC Community College system. http://vlc.nccommunitycolleges.edu/

Writing a first novel, Advice???

We Answered:

Ooh, what fun! I am a Journalist, and have toyed with writing a short story or novel to have published, but haven't gone through with it. So exciting!

I think first making a looong outline of characters, chapter flow, settings, high points, low points, etc. is a must. You have to have a direction, or you'll just get frustrated. It is fun to just let it all "flow", but then you can end up overwhelmed with all your ideas! I've done it!

I love online writing resources. They are FREE, always being updated, and you can search for answers to questions specifically about the type of story you are writing. There's one really cool one called "WOW: Women on Writing". A lot of it is about Chick Lit, but some is about other styles of writing.

I would love to give input or edit your stuff!

Neil Said:

Source for writing terminology???

We Answered:

Creative non-fiction is a relatively recently recognized “genre” that involves writing from
personal experience and/or reporting on other peoples’ experiences. The best creative non-fiction
work usually involves conducting a considerable amount of research, most often “in the field,”
involving oral history interviewing, participant observation, detective/sleuthing work, as well as
jumping into new adventures. The range of possible topics is virtually unlimited, and this type of
writing actually has a very long history. Creative nonfiction encompasses memoir writing,
biography and autobiography, oral history, and inspired reportage on almost any subject. It
involves writing about actual events in your own life and/or others’ lives, conveying your
message through the use of literary techniques such as characterization, plot, setting, dialogue,
narrative and personal reflection.

Dwight Said:

Where can I read Cricket by Walter Whipple online?

We Answered:

"Cricket" is not actually by Walter Whipple. He translated it, but the poet who wrote it is Jan Brzechwa. I can find only the first couple of lines in English:
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia…

There are links to more than 25 of Whipple's other poetry translations here, though:

Here's another website that would help if you were to choose a different poem:

Is this poem by dave chapelle written somewhere online?

We Answered:

Here it is:

One night at 3 AM I went to the corner store
I forgot why...oh, that's right, I wanted a bite
because I had the munchies and I was high
The store is owned by Mr. Fong
And every day he sees me, he does me wrong
He's Korean, and I never say that I hate all Korean people
I haven't met all Korean people, that hate talk is for savages
But even though I don't generalize, I do do percentages and averages
So far I hate 1 out of 5 Korean people I've met so far
So I come in the store..."hello Mr. Fong", I say
And he just scowls and me and growls at me
"Buy something...hurry up"
Now look, I'm not stealing the least
But if you're shopping, and you know someone's watching you shop
That sure makes you look like a thief
Mr. Fong said, "Hey! I've been watching you since you came in the door,
buy something now, or get out of my store!"
Now "I" couldn't take it anymore
"Hey, Hey!" I said, raising my hand, "get your fingers out of my face
China man!"
Mr. Fong say "Hey! Hey! what make you think I'm Chinese? You must have no what you saying! You made a mistake "brack man", Mr. Fong is Korean!"
Now, I was wrong. I was wrong, I said, uh, Mr. Fong, I sorry to offend
by mistaking your race, but you gotta admit, if it was a Chinese look-alike contest, your *** would place!
You're a dead ringer for a Chinese
But don't be mad at me, I didn't mean to offend you in the least
Some people say all black people look alike, we call those people, "Police". Thank you.

there you have it :)
