Derek Said:

does anyone know if there is a film, music or creative writing society in south london i could join?

We Answered:

There used to be a group called the Brixton Poets...I'm not sure if they're still around.

The River Writers meet in Hoxton and are very pleasant. They meet above a pub. They are led by a man called Julian Dufus who is friendly.

Also try ex-ballet dancer Simon Baker's group in Bloomsbury, which I've heard good things about, contact on: si.baker@ntlworld.com

I think there are listings in Time Out.

Universities That Offer Creative Writing As A Major Option In London Or Near By?

We Answered:

There are differences in the jargon between the US and England. This blog post explains some of them (the university level section is near the bottom) http://separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogsp…
Bascially US college = UK University (but there are lots of exceptions to this)
Where Americans do 4 years at college and start with general education before selecting a major we do 3 years and you choose your main subject when you apply to go to university. (You'll probably do some other study, at least in the first year.)

So you're looking for a university that offers degrees (not 'majors') in Creative Writing. All applications go through an organisation called UCAS, and their website has lots of useful info. It includes a course search facility and seaching for Creative Writing gives this list
http://search.ucas.com/cgi-bin/hsrun/sea…
(I selected Creative from the alphabetical list, then Creative Writing from the list of options it gave.) Some of them are in or near London.

You might find the various league tables listed here useful
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_tabl…
to compare different universities. Follow the links to the individual lists and look for Creative writing courses on them.

The entry requirements for the courses may be desribed in terms of British A level exams e.g. BBB means candidates need three A levels at grade B or better, or as a points score in the UCAS tariff which is a scale for comparing different qualifications, including US APP scores, e.g. a grade 5 APP in English Literature and Composition is 120 points.

Also check the international students sections of any course you're interested in, that will explain what SATs etc would be acceptable as SATs aren't covered by the tariff table.

You also need to think about how easy or not it will be for you to get a visa to study in the UK, and the costs. The fees for students from outside the European Union are much higher than for local students, but cheaper than similar courses in the USA.
