Creative Writing Jobs

Darlene Said:

What are the highest-paying jobs for creative writing majors?

We Answered:

Obviously, writing a best-selling work with film rights! Rare, but it does happen. A good advertising firm will pay a high income after you've demonstrated you can deliver the goods -- but you'll need to work your way up. Down the scale from there, editing jobs can offer solid income, though not super-high. Check out travel magazines -- one good place to begin as a free-lancer. The monthlies are always looking for well-written articles and you fund more travel with such a job, once you have a string of credits to your name. Same with other kinds of reviews, if you take the time to build a portfolio.

You can find a number of good jobs in other fields where good writing skills pay off -- many industries are looking for writers to create instruction manuals, guidebooks, etc. Then there's teaching jobs, which is how many writers survive -- at least it often deals with books and writing, and you can get lots of ideas from colleagues and students. Good luck.

What are good jobs dealing with creative writing??

We Answered:

Unless you can submit some short stories to a newspaper and persuade them to start a fiction section in a weekend edition of their newspaper, there isn't very many jobs writing fiction. I would advise you to take a writing course in which you can study both creative and business writing, and when you graduate, see if there are any available jobs where you can write business correspondence, until your aspirations take off. If you can go to work for a charity organization, talk to them about writing a novel or collection of short stories as a fundraising project. I'm sure they'll take you up on your offer.

You have to get some short stories published to get yourself noticed before you can submit a novel, and after that, it will be more of you having a contract with a publisher, rather than actually working FOR the publisher. Even so, it will take a lot of time and patience to get published, so don't feel hopeless. Good luck to you on your career.

Ted Said:

What jobs could a writing/creative writing major possibly have in the future?

We Answered:

Are you kidding me? In this digital age, every company in the world is screaming for creative content. They need it every hour, every day, every week. Companies and agencies are beefing up their creative staffs now, and no matter how many writers a company has, they need more. The key is being good, know how to work in a corporate environment, and don't be too proud--the company owns your content and can do what they like with it. But there's a lot of good money in it. I was laid off from a big company in August, where I was a senior marketing copywriter. Only seven weeks later, I was choosing from three different offers from three companies. I chose one that offered great pay, flexibility, and incredible benefits. And I write creatively, every day.

Jim Said:

What jobs are available in Creative Writing?

We Answered:

The best paid writers are actually technical writers. The worst paid writers are fiction writers. Only about 1% of fiction writers make minimum wage and only 1% of those make a living at it.

The technical writing field includes designing content for website, writing manuals, and creating handbooks and presentations for companies. With it, you can be hired on at a company or work freelance to make a living. If I had to make my choices over again, I would probably be in this field.

A novel writer does everything on spec (as in speculation). For a first novel, you have to write the whole thing before approaching agents/publishers. That's unpaid work. If you get a contract, you MIGHT get a small advance when the book is delivered and a publication date two years away. By small advance, I mean $5000. By contrast, a minium wage job would net you $16,000 in a year. Writing is, undoubtably, the poorest paid profession.

So how do writers make it? They get degrees in other fields. Stephen King had a teaching degree (masters) and actually taught until Carrie propelled him to the top. Isaac Asimov had a doctorate in some hard science (I think Biochemistry). The author of Nathan's Run actually worked in the juvenile detention field and had degrees pertaining to it. Clive Cussler was a lawyer.

The trick is to get a degree and jobs in a field you are interested in writing about. Want to write mysteries? Go for criminal justice and law enforcement. Want to write about everyday people achieving against the odds, social work will help you meet those people. Want to write about space? You need a solid background in science. If you can land a job in a space agency, all the better. Otherwise, you are going to have to research and improvise.

Of course, if you want to write romance, you have to have a really good imagination and a taste for fantasy. By the time you are 25, you'll know exactly what I mean.
