A story usually has a quest or a task or a mission that is written in so gripping a way that the reader is totally hooked to the book. The plot should revolve around a solid central idea (it can be anything) and the characters should not waver away suddenly when the story is flowing. And the plot should have sense. Its okay if its bizzare or weird but it should have a positive quality of sense and intrigue.

For example, what he does to try and inspire him, imcluding Yahoo Q&As !
Why not ? I think it's a good idea.

Okay, so this might sound like babbling but as an aspiring author, I think it might give you what you need: so I'm getting this image of a small clearing with pale green grass and a crystalline waterfall falling into a small round spring. Something is glittering at the bottom. Something else is lurking in the trees as though it wants to come out but it can't and a lost girl/boy/whatever else you might imagine stumbles into the clearing, terrified because of rumors of dark monsters in the forest. Okay, so that was totally long winded and I have absolutely no idea where it came from, but go ahead and expand on it if you want. Oh, and don't worry about stealing ideas. Seriously, I have too many other ideas to work on I'd never get around to anything like this. Good luck writing!

What I do is keep a journal. Eventually after lots of thinking and recording I can come up with a story from that. Just keep reading, recording, and listening to inspirational music (that helps me think when I write. I can't write without music!)

Also, if you write for a straight six minutes without stopping you can start getting ideas more quickly. That's what I do sometimes. I'll start out with something simple like this:

I liked the book Poison Study I liked the medieval setting but it would be cool if a book weren't set in a fantastical medieval time, but a fantastical ancient Egypt -like place. I could take the elements of life in ancient egypt and create my own desert -esque setting.

list of Egypt books to read (this is still in the example, you'll need to do research for this but these actually are god books!):

Sphinx Princess

Ok, so maybe that didn't take five minutes but i got a beginning to a plot from it. You can actually use that for a setting example/start. Here are some other cool settings and/or stories with cool settings. I'll have my friends make up these lists for me, they always help:
