Creative Writing High School

Clyde Said:

What are some good ideas for activities for a high school creative writing club? Will choose best answer...?

We Answered:

When you are in charge of a club- or helping run sessions you have a lot of planning ahead to do, but it can be a lot of fun! First, you are going to want to sit down and think of Agendas for each meeting. Like your first meeting: 1. Have everyone introduce themselves 2. Explain the goals your club hopes to achieve, tell them its gonna be a great club, encourage them to bring more people 3. Ask them to share a Little about themselves, and who is their favorite writter/ journalist. 4. Start on your topic for the day.

Its also REALLY helpful if you can get a professor or teacher from your school- and local colleges to come talk with your club sometime. See if you have anyone interested in pursuing a career in journalism, they might enjoy a guest who could answer their questions! (Im using this site as an example: http://www.creativewritingprompts.com/
On that site when you mouse over the numbers, each had an idea for starting a creative writting prompt. Why dont you pick aspects of creative writing you talk about with everyone? (Like here, I would pick a day to talk about where everyone gets their ideas for creative writing!)

It also makes your club stronger and more legitimate if you host a fund raiser once or twice a year. Do a clothing drive or book drive and you can put that on your transcripts for college!

Yeah, that sounds about right.

The writing prompts are usually boring or weird or something you're not at all interested in. I tended to twist mine so that they sort of fit the prompt, but spun far off in a completely different direction or went more in-depth. And creepy.

Although I think my class wouldn't have been nearly as much fun if my friend and I hadn't decided to hold a contest to see who could get sent to the counselor's office for disturbing writing first. Neither of us won, although I managed to give one girl nightmares.

Your creative writing class is only as boring as you make it. Have fun with the prompts. For the prompt above, don't write "I think of red as female because...", write a story incorporating the color red symbolizing female.

I'll be teaching a high school creative writing class next semester and I'm looking for ideas. Can you help?

We Answered:

You probably have used these but something here may be of help:

writing a different ending to a well known story

writing a traditional story from a different point of view (Three Little Pigs from the wolf's perspective)

write an account of what they would like to be famous for

historical fiction

write to submit to a teen magazine or a contest

humorous stories to submit to Reader's Digest

I hope something here will be of help. Good luck with your class.
