Tracy Said:

Does anyone know of any good creative writing excercises?

We Answered:

LSD....just kidding!

Well, I do a bit of creative writing myself, and to get myself inspired, I rely on nature and music.

first, nature, maybe you can go outside, look at the night sky. daytime maybe the rain or clouds, the mountains, a leaf on the ground, the smell of the breeze, the trees, the scent of the morning dew, the crashing waves of the sea etc...Nature is my #1 inspiration

second is music. I listen to argentine tango music to get fired up and passionate about something. Or listen to calm music (Paul Collier works well!) Meditation music, or smooth jazz.

This is to stimulate your OWN creative process in your brain. I don't usually use any conventional "exercises."

Maybe you can try these methods to open up new perspectives.

Or you can read one of my pieces...

These are both, from what I mentioned, from being inspired by nature and music. The rain piece is by music and the floating in the void is by music & nature. :)

What should you do in writing club?

We Answered:

If you are writing poetry a good game is to put students in pairs. Get one of pair to write a line of poetry then fold it over so their partners can't see it. Then the partner writes a line and folds it over and they continue until the end of the page. Then it's time to read them out to the class. It is a good way to warm up, generally good fun and the results may be surprising!
On the prose front, suggest a scenario and give them ten minutes to write a short piece using it. Make it something they can do something with - perhaps tell them to imagine they saw their little brother stealing in a shop - something that will put them in a dilemma.

I wish you luck!
