Creative Writing Exercises

Felix Said:

Does anyone know any good writing exercises?

We Answered:

There are loads of great writing groups in Yahoo Groups, search for one that meets your needs. I prefer one with plenty of members, has been around for a few years, and is fairly specific about it's purpose in its description.

To avoid email inbox overload, be sure to select "daily digest" instead of "individual emails."

What are some good writing exercises for a creative writer?

We Answered:

Hey

Some that I've found very useful:

Think about different aspects of writing

1) Descriptional Writing
Think of a scene/person/object and describe it, for example, write how a park would look in spring/summer and how it would look in autumn/winter, remember the five senses and use them to help you develop into sentences. However remember when writing stories try not to write in prose (excessive, unnecessary description).

2) Emotion/Thought Writing
Look at the character and how they feel about a situation; actions, speech, feelings, thought. Try varied ones; the feelings love, anger, hate, pride. Try to SHOW not tell, for example the body language used to express the feelings (clenched fist, walking broadly)

3) Character Views
Think about a situation that could affect a number of characters, and write in their views. Try to use a range of characters, personalities in order for you to broaden this and think about different reactions

4) Literary Devices
Look at writing devices and such, including unique similes, metaphors and more.

5) Quotations
I've found quotations as a very useful starting point for stories

Hope these help

Looking for some creative writing exercises...?

We Answered:

Free write. Take out a piece of paper, a pen, and a device that tracks time. Start writing and don't stop until the five minutes are over. Don't stop to think about what you're writing, or to correct your spelling, or to erase the mistakes you've made. If you can't think of anything, then just write "I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING" for the whole five minutes.
