Creative Writing Exercise

Ricardo Said:

What excuses are there to exercise creative writing?

We Answered:

How about a blog?

Creative writing is about creativity - do whatever you feel most inspired to do! You shouldn't have to search for new ideas - true creativity cannot be forced.

Carolyn Said:

Group project: I need to give my class a creative writing exercise to do on Angela's Ashes...any suggesstions?

We Answered:

It's been a while since I read this, but here goes...

-Write a story about your mother.
-Write a story about a time when you expected one thing, but it wound up being something very different (like when Frank got communion)
-Have you ever felt disappointed by your parents or someone else close to you?
-Tell about a time when you noticed a class difference between you and someone else.
-Hunger is a recurring theme. Have you ever felt hungry? How was that different from the hunger of Frank and his siblings?
-Frank and others blame the English for much of their miseries. Do you think it is reasonable to blame your current circumstances on someone else past actions? Why or why not?
-Frank liked listening to his father's stories of Irish heroes. Tell a story about a hero you either make up or have heard about before.

Dwayne Said:

What is the best writing exercise for creative writing?

We Answered:

Honestly, it depends on your strong suits of writing. You should always try to expand your writing skills, so if you are good at say, oh, stream-of-consciousness writing and you can write your butt off about anything and everything within a minute or two, try to excerise the other end of the spectrum. Pick different prompts and alternate daily. Do an essay one day, a short story the next, a haiku the next, and so forth. Try strengthening the parts of your writing that need the most help. It will completely expand your creative capabilities.
